Business Plan Competition

One of more challenging aspects of being on your own is how you spend your time. I have always love community service but have been feeling more and more conflicted about the time spent away from business. That being said, one of my goals this year was to spend 10% of my working time to helping other social causes I believe in. One of my passion projects is an initiative I am working on with for pathos|creative. We are currently working on a social venture that would bring high-speed internet access and a reliable source of electricity to Bommakal as a first step to establishing an arts and technology venture in the village. As semifinalists in a business plan competition, we submitted our final business plan today at 4:30PM EST. Fingers crossed! The need:

While cities offer good schools and attract talented teachers, the small villages have very few resources educate and equip the children for India’s increasingly competitive world economy. Further, the lack of opportunities in the villages results in an exodus of educated and capable people to the cities. This results in broken families, a vacuum of positive role models and further depletion of the village’s assets.

Quick highlights of the business plan:

• The huge growth of business processing outsourcing (BPO) has enabled outsourcing providers with a social mission to benefit disadvantaged populations through the nascent subfield of impact sourcing. 
• Impact sourcing (IS) serves people with limited opportunity for sustainable employment and extends computer-based employment to people with modest educations in developing countries.
• Impact sourcing has great potential to alleviate poverty in the developing world - allowing people "work with dignity" while improving their productive capacity

pathos|creative plans to create competitive jobs in rural India by leveraging the impact sourcing model for the post-production editing market, while using the proceeds to support the work of Christian-run nonprofit organizations serving the area.

This venture will

 connect post-production editors in Los Angeles, CA with assistant editors in India trained through the pathos|creative program.

Participating editors will hire assistant editors to handle time-consuming, technical work which requires little creative training.

Short promo format projects such as movie trailers require a significant amount of cataloguing and it is common industry practice for editors to hire assistant editors to handle the technical work of cataloging.

For example, with movie trailers, it generally takes two full 8-hour days to prep all the footage into the standard editing system of separating each clip by line of dialogue.

Outsourcing the technical work of cataloging frees the editor’s time to take on more projects and hourly rate differential can earn the editor $600-$800 per project.
